Toyota Tacoma review from our Dealership
The mid-size truck market is a hugely competitive one, with the best pickups in the class combining power and performance with high value. The Toyota Tacoma is a perfect example of this combination, and it consistently heads the best-seller lists, leaving competitors from Ford and others trailing behind.
Will the latest release of this popular truck maintain its lead? Read our 2020 Toyota Tacoma review to find out.
Body Formats
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is available in either double cab or access cab formats, both with four doors. Built with a secure body-on-frame structure, it’s a truck that feels solid and reliable.
Powertrain and Performance
All versions of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma have a 3.5L direct injection V6 engine at the heart of the powertrain, delivering a hefty 278 horsepower with 265lb-ft of torque to the all-wheel drive.
As standard, the transmission is a six-speed automatic model, but those who prefer a more hands-on drive can opt for a six-speed manual gearbox instead. Both configurations provide plenty of power for passing, with the engine reacting surprisingly quickly to the gas pedal.
Towing and Payload
As a mid-size truck, the Tacoma is a workhorse rather than a powerhouse, but it still puts in a solid performance in capability terms. It’s maximum payload of 450kg is plenty for general recreation use and smaller work tasks, while its maximum towing capacity of 2,860kg is ample for most people. A factory-installed hitch is supplied as standard on all models.
Fuel Economy
Even for a mid-size truck, the fuel economy of the Tacoma is impressive, with figures closer to a high-end SUV than a pickup. For city driving, the Tacoma manages 12.7L / 100km, with 10.6L / 100km on the highway. The gasoline tank holds a generous 80L of fuel to keep you on the road for longer between stops.
Safety Features
Safety is vital whether you’re trucking for work, recreation, or daily driving tasks. The Tacoma features a solid range of features as standard, including:
- A full set of airbags throughout the cabin.
- Electronic stability control.
- Driveline traction control with ABS.
- Lane departure warnings with steering assist.
- Backup camera.
The Limited trim adds many additional features including blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alerts, and a 360 degree birds eye camera system.
Interior Technology
The 2020 Tacoma features an upgraded 8″ touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility built in. The console has an array of traditional gauges and controls, paired with a 4″ screen in the centre of the instrument cluster to give a clear, uncluttered display.
Tacoma Pricing
For 2020, the base Tacoma comes in at a starting price of $37,450, rising to $50,750 for the top-level Limited trim. Whichever trim you choose, the Tacoma provides plenty of truck for your money.
2020 Toyota Tacoma Verdict
There are many reasons why Tacoma reigns supreme in the mid-size market, comfortably outselling its rivals year on year. It consistently offers an excellent combination of performance, capability, and value, resulting in a hard-working and reliable truck at a very attractive price. Happily, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma keeps firmly to the standards previous models have set.
