2022 Toyota Corolla Cross vs Rav4 | Which One is Right for You?

2022 Toyota Corolla Cross vs Rav4 | Which One is Right for You?

The Toyota SUV range continues to expand with the launch of the all-new 2022 Corolla Cross. However, the model is up against some stiff competition – not least from other members of the Toyota family. The Rav4 is a longstanding success with huge sales figures to underline its popularity, but does it match up to the newcomer? Read on to find out the similarities and differences between these two Toyota SUVs.

Powertrain and Performance

The Corolla Cross is available with a single engine choice, comprising a 2.0L four-cylinder gas mill making 169 horsepower and 151lb-ft of torque. The output is passed to front-wheel or all-wheel drive via a continuously variable transmission, delivering smooth and confident handling.

In contrast, the Rav4 is available with more powerful engine options. The standard model is a 2.5L inline-four gas design producing 203 horsepower and 184lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel or all-wheel drive. However, the Rav4 is available with a pair of hybrid powertrain options which can deliver up to 302 horsepower for increased driving excitement.

If you’re looking for a powerful but economical daily drive, then the Corolla Cross probably makes the better choice. However, if you’re looking for more power, the Rav4 will deliver but it might be over the top for many everyday needs.

Fuel Economy

For city driving, the Corolla Cross makes an enticing option with a fuel economy figure of 7.6L / 100km, substantially more economical than the Rav4’s 8.7L / 100km. However, the tables are turned when it comes to highway driving, with the Rav4 managing 6.7L / 100km compared to the Corolla Cross figure of 7.1L / 100km.

If your daily drive involves long distances then the Rav4’s power and economy makes it the better choice, but for urban driving duties you won’t beat the Corolla Cross.

Interior and Technology

Both SUVs seat up to five in genuine comfort, but the Corolla Cross has slightly more generous front-row legroom at 109cm against the Rav4’s 104cm. The difference may be small but it could be crucial for larger adult passengers. In the rear row, both vehicles offer an identically generous 100cm.

The infotainment technology is more or less equivalent across the two lineups, with a 7″ touchscreen display as standard featuring smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both models also offer a Wi-Fi hotspot facility and extended media functions, but only the Rav4 offers a HD radio option.

Corolla Cross vs Rav4: Decision Time

Both the Corolla Cross and the Rav4 would make a purchase you won’t regret, but they’re ultimately aimed at different markets. If you’re looking for high-powered highway cruising, then the Rav4 is the model to choose. But if you drive mostly in city traffic, the Corolla Cross makes a little more sense.
